SOOTHING SOUND OF SITAR STRINGS
With a bow to the audience and Namaskar to the dais, Rishab Rikhiram Sharma in a golden dress and trademark henna painted on his hands entered the arena. He enthralled the audience with his mesmerising performance. He commenced with a connection with the crowd through a deep breathing session followed by a soulful raga recitation that got the crowd in the grid of music.
The youngest and last disciple of legendary Siatrist, Pandit Ravi Shankar began his journey under his father, his first Guru at the age of ten and was taken on the stage by thirteen where he went international at twenty-six, an advocate of mental health, partnering with UN, performing internationally and the first solo Indian classical musician to perform at the White House showcasing his talent at the world stage. Born in the renowned Rikhi Ram family of luthiers in Delhi his aim to fuse the rich traditions of Indian classical music with modernity is taking him places. His sold-out shows and internet presence have fans of all ages showing his utmost commitment and perseverance to his craft. He continues to push the boundaries and recently is blending traditional ragas with contemporary flair adding an audience globally.
Playing his famous compositions interspersed with the new innovations while making the concert interactive, he won their hearts. A mix for everyone with some hits, patriotic songs to devotion to Shiva was soul-stirring. Harry Potter and Game of Thrones music was an unexpected gift. In the middle of the performance, he moved back to perform for his fans sitting in the end making their day.
He creates a serene atmosphere making it an immersive experience for the audience. The interactive session brought the artist closer to the audience, an audience, a mix of young and old swayed to the music that softened their soul. Incredible performance for mental health, we came back home in the trance of the soothing sounds of classical music with a modern edge who is taking the legacy forward while entirely making his own. The sitar, a musical instrument, is a vessel of healing. Music is truly healing, and his performance a case in point. His soul-stirring music provides solace, and strength and heals the soul. Musical melody in motion stays long after sound fades, a transcendent meditative experience.
Thanks, Sonia...for strumming the strings of memory...I was transported back to my college years, when we'd be treated to hours of superlative Indian classical as well as Indo-western fusion, and I've had the priceless occasion or two of attending Pandit Ravi Shankar's concerts too.
